Healing Hearts

My friend’s divorce was final last week.  She had mixed emotions about it because she still loved her husband.  Her head was spinning with confusion as it had been for the past four months from the time he walked out of her life.  She said he quit loving her.  She had to let go now and begin a new chapter in her life which meant moving toward a brighter, happier place even though her heart was aching for his well-being.

We had some long talks about what lead him to this place in his life.  It appeared his heart had stopped being able to love because of his pornography addiction.  Suddenly, I had a flood of memories of former times when friends and family members experienced the exact same scenario.  The excuses of why they were unable to demonstrate their love may have been slightly different, but the same root problem caused each of these spouses to loose their true ability to love.

Doctrine and Covenants 45: 26 And in that day shall be heard of wars and rumors of wars, and the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men’s hearts shall fail them, and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the end of the earth.

27 And the love of men shall wax cold, and iniquity shall abound.

We surely are at that time and place when the prophet Joseph Smith foresaw. I always wondered how the Nephite nation became uncivilized within such a short period of time until they were completely destroyed.

Mormon 5:16 For behold, the Spirit of the Lord hath already ceased to strive with their fathers; and they are without Christ and God in the world; and they are driven about as chaff before the wind.

17 They were once a delightsome people, and they had Christ for their shepherd; yea, they were led even by God the Father.

18 But now, behold, they are led about by Satan, even as chaff is driven before the wind, or as a vessel is tossed about upon the waves, without sail or anchor, or without anything wherewith to steer her; and even as she is, so are they.

Pondering upon this modern plague with it’s resemblance of olden times, I recalled a scripture found in Proverbs 31:10 ¶Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.  The power women have over men is something so profound and it’s very clear how any worldly gain stems from its misuse.  The use of seduction is, in my opinion, the reason men’s hearts are failing in these last days.  This not only degrades women, devastates families like my friend and others, but mostly it causes mankind to loose his ability to love.

Why is a virtuous woman worth far more than rubies?  Is it because the layered good that comes from her righteous life not only blesses her family, but helps keep generations of hearts healthy?  If she can learn through examples of other righteous women, the good she can do is immeasurable.

“What you sisters do today will determine how the principles of the restored gospel can influence the nations of the world tomorrow. It will determine how these heavenly rays of the gospel will light every land in the future. 4

President Gordon B. Hinckley counseled the women of the Church:

“It is so tremendously important that the women of the Church stand strong and immovable for that which is correct and proper under the plan of the Lord. …

“We call upon the women of the Church to stand together for righteousness. They must begin in their own homes. They can teach it in their classes. They can voice it in their communities.” 2The Influence of Righteous Women as taught to us by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

If we or someone we love have lost the ability to love, don’t lose heart; The good news of the gospel is that we men and women can be forgiven because “The purpose of the gospel is to cleanse people of their sins so they can receive the Savior’s mercy at the day of judgment.”  Preach My Gospel  This can begin with a virtuous woman.  Families can be made strong and the love of men will increase once more.  Heartaches can be mended and joy can resume within marriages.  I pray my friend’s heart can mend and that she will once again find true love, joy and happiness.  I also pray her ex-husband’s heart will look to the Atonement of Jesus Christ to heal.
