Tears were streaming down her face as she described her experience to me. My friend and I were in a yoga class together like we had been going to for the past several years, but today was different because she finally allowed herself to mentally and spiritually go deep inside her heart and soul: She received personal revelation.
After our class together, I recall asking my friend if everything was alright. Her answer blew me away as she described how she was able to let go of some issues of forgiveness and love that had haunted her for years. It was the yoga practice that helped her delve deep into her soul and heart that released this negative emotion she was unknowingly holding onto: She felt liberated: She felt like a new person and it was magnificent. I know her experience is not an isolated event independently confined to her alone, as many of us have received personal revelation and healing during our yoga practice. We have felt the release from detrimental or harmful behaviors, thoughts or feelings we unintentionally maintain, sustain and perpetuate. Today, I would like to say thank you to my Yoga instructor. Her classes have always been inadvertently intended just for me. Little does she know what is going on inside my body, mind or my spirit but because of her sensitivity and love for her practice and students, she is able to tap into the unseen that helps us tap out of the unwanted.
So what is personal revelation? Does one need to be a prophet to have it? How do we get it and how do we know from what source it comes? Why do we receive revelation?
Personal revelation is free for all of Heavenly Father’s children who want a better today and tomorrow for themselves. When we learn how to follow Jesus Christ, our own revelation prepares our hearts and minds to be receptive to His truths that teach us how to live happily now on earth and how to return and live with Him again. PR can also inspire us about things that pertain to this mortal existence as we have witnessed with so many inventions given to man, in particularly during the past 200 years since the light of Christ has been restored upon earth again. It is a necessity in our lives because we are dual beings and need to learn how to strengthen our dualistic nature. “There are two parts to your nature—your temporal body born of mortal parents, and your immortal spirit within. You are a son or daughter of God. Physically you can see with eyes and hear with ears and touch and feel and learn. Through your intellect, you learn most of what you know about the world in which we live. But if you learn by reason only, you will never understand the Spirit and how it works—regardless of how much you learn about other things. The scriptures teach that “great men are not always wise.”2 Spiritually you may “know not, and know not that you know not,” and be “ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”3 Your spirit learns in a different way than does your intellect.” Elder Boyd K. Packer
Based on modern revelation from an Apostle of God, Elder Packer’s words attest to why I believe when we practice Yoga, we tap into our five senses and our spiritual being, and that it makes for a good breading ground for personal revelation….but not without prayer and faith. 16 For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God. Moroni 9:16
So what is modern revelation? There may be some people who don’t believe in modern revelation and who say it is done away with and there is no such thing as modern prophets. They may say modern scripture revealed today are man’s good attempt to copy scripture of old. It may be interesting to note that this dispute is no new news. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ and his Apostles were rejected and killed by the Jews, Samaritans, Pharisees and the Sadducees primarily upon this same argument. They were not happy about the changes pertaining to the Law of Moses nor the New Testament teachings that were in the making by Jesus Christ. Often, Jesus quoted from Old Testament prophets, especially Isaiah. Did this mean he was not a true prophet because he quoted old and added new scripture? Haven’t all prophets and apostles quoted each other throughout history and written God’s words known as scripture? In their way, this reasoning was what made them mock him for not being a “true” prophet because they truly missed what was in front of their eyes Matthew 7:3-5. Again, there are those today who cry blasphemy in the face of modern revelation (perhaps they think they can TELL God what he can and cannot reveal to his children…isn’t this true blasphemy?) To those who say it is wrong to add to the Bible , “6 Thou fool, that shall say: A Bible, we have got a Bible, and we need no more Bible. Have ye obtained a Bible save it were by the Jews?” 2 Nephi 29:6
So, how do we know where revelation comes from? It’s easy; you test it! The spirit of God teaches all men the truthfulness of salvation and those gifts of the spirit are found in Galatians 5:22 . This revelation is not man’s words but God’s words and brings all people on common ground. “As you test gospel principles by believing without knowing, the Spirit will begin to teach you. Gradually your faith will be replaced with knowledge. You will be able to discern, or to see, with spiritual eyes. Be believing and your faith will be constantly replenished, your knowledge of the truth increased, and your testimony of the Redeemer, of the Resurrection, of the Restoration will be as “a well of living water, springing up unto everlasting life.”25 You may then receive guidance on practical decisions in everyday life.”
Why do we receive personal revelation? To help us be ready and available for all of Heavenly Father’s gifts and blessings and to use them to assist him in His Work and Glory which is to bring to pass the Immortality and Eternal Salvation of all mankind= IAESOAM :). 11 Behold I say unto you, that whosoever has heard the words of the prophets, yea, all the holy prophets who have prophesied concerning the coming of the Lord—I say unto you, that all those who have hearkened unto their words, and believed that the Lord would redeem his people, and have looked forward to that day for a remission of their sins, I say unto you, that these are his seed, or they are the heirs of the kingdom of God. 12 For these are they whose sins he has borne; these are they for whom he has died, to redeem them from their transgressions. And now, are they not his seed? 13 Yea, and are not the prophets, every one that has opened his mouth to prophesy, that has not fallen into transgression, I mean all the holy prophets ever since the world began? I say unto you that they are his seed. 14 And these are they who have published peace, who have brought good tidings of good, who have published salvation; and said unto Zion: Thy God reigneth! 15 And O how beautiful upon the mountains were their feet! Mosiah 15: 12-15
Modern revelation is on the earth again. Apostles prophets, seers and revelators are on the earth again; they who hold the keys to administer for the welfare of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints . As we can see by my friend’s experience, each member is entitled to receive personal revelation. All worthy men can hold the priesthood which is like holding an umbrella where all the members feel it’s protective influence underneath and are safe from the storms around them. It is up to us to be worthy of personal revelation. “If worthy, we are entitled to receive revelations for ourselves, parents for their children, and members of the Church in their callings. But the right of revelation for others does not extend beyond our own stewardship.”
