Fifteen years ago today, anti-freedom people set out to bring down America by attacking the heart of our country: Trade and commerce, military and the government. The same thing happened in the year 50 BC. to a city called Zarahemla in ancient America by a secret band of robbers named Gadianton.
“And it came to pass that because of so much contention and so much difficulty in the government, that they had not kept sufficient guards in the land of Zarahemla; for they had supposed that the Lamanites durst not come into the heart of their lands to attack that great city Zarahemla. But it came to pass that Coriantumr did march forth at the head of his numerous host, and came upon the inhabitants of the city, and their march was with such exceedingly great speed that there was no time for the Nephites to gather together their armies. Therefore Coriantumr did cut down the watch by the entrance of the city, and did march forth with his whole army into the city, and they did slay every one who did oppose them, insomuch that they did take possession of the whole city. Helaman 1: 18-20
Contenders of the established free government system were at the root of this takeover, not people from the outside. Plots of murder were executed in order to fulfill this design which lead to the banding together of a secret group. Unfortunately for them, not all their secret society was loyal; therefore, in an attempt to murder the next chief judge, this secret plot was thwarted by a servant of the chief judge who stabbed the would-be murderer in the heart. Upon his non-return, this secret band fled and went into hiding.
So we see, the heartland of America, much like Zarahemla, the heartland of America nearly 2000 years ago, became the target again for a secret band to overthrow our free system of governance. The discord that pride, hatred, envy and contention brought onto American soil was at the heart of the problem. The military was made week, people were unprepared or preoccupied with worldly gain and prosperity that they didn’t even notice what was happening right under their noses. It didn’t help… “that the Nephites did build them up and support them, beginning at the more wicked part of them, until they had overspread all the land of the Nephites, and had seduced the more part of the righteous until they had come down to believe in their works and partake of their spoils, and to join with them in their secret murders and combinations.” Helaman 6:38-40
While the “free” people were aligning themselves in wicked plots with this secret band, many outside people were defending themselves by eradicating them from among them...” And thus we see that the Spirit of the Lord began to withdraw from the Nephites, because of the wickedness and the hardness of their hearts. And thus we see that the Lord began to pour out his spirit upon the Lamanites, because of their easiness and willingness to believe in his words. And it came to pass that the Lamanites did hunt the band of robbers of Gadianton; and they did preach the word of God among the more wicked part of them, insomuch that this band of robbers was utterly destroyed from among the Lamanites.” Helaman 6:35-37
In the end, we see how easy prey America is when we are bickering amongst ourselves, caught up in the vain things of the world and have forgotten God and His commandment: “And thus they did obtain the sole management of the government, insomuch that they did trample under their feet and smite and rend and turn their backs upon the poor and the meek, and the humble followers of God. And thus we see that they were in an awful state, and ripening for an everlasting destruction. Helaman 6:39-40
If the free people of Zarahemla, or the Nephite Nation, had not continued in their pride, nor turned away from God, freedom would not have been lost from them, nor the ruination of their civilization. And behold, in the end of this book (The Book of Mormon) ye shall see that this Gadianton (secret band) did prove the overthrow, yea, almost the entire destruction of the people of Nephi. Helaman 2:13
Remember our tender feelings after 9/11 and how we became a better and more unified people? Let’s regain trust with each other and find that common denominator that will glue us back together as a country before more attacks happen again. If we take a look at Captain Moroni’s title of Liberty, we may find the answer.
